Web3D Consortium, Menlo Park (PRWEB) July 20, 2010

The Web3D 2010 Conference will be co-located with ACM SIGGRAPH 2010 (http://www.siggraph.org/s2010/), July 24 and 25, 2010 at the LA Convention Center, Los Angeles CA, USA. Attendees will share and explore methods of using, enhancing and creating new 3D Web and Multimedia technologies such as X3D, VRML, Collada, MPEG family, U3D, Java3D and other technologies.

With over 25 paper presentations, tutorials, workshops and panel sessions, the conference also focuses on recent trends in interactive 3D graphics, information integration and usability in the wide range of Web3D applications from mobile devices to high-end immersive environments. More information on the program is available at: (http://conferences.web3d.org/web3d2010/conference_program)

The ever popular Web3D Art & Design Show is back this year and is open to the public. The Web3D Art & Design group will present the Web3D Design Retrospective as well as an exhibition of new works. Visions of virtual spaces, old and new will be shared. Issues of art, application, design, and theory will be discussed in two talks. For most of the time the space will be open for exploration and contemplation.

Key note Speaker, Dr. Carl Reeds (CTO, Open Geospatial Consortium ) will present his perspective on integrating networked 3D virtual environments for geospatial technology and his vision of how such technology needs to be developed toward the progress of open, web-ready and ISO platforms.

Along with other technologies, Web3D Consortium s (http://web3d.org) X3D enterprise systems will be showcased together with tutorials and workshops discussing the benefits of X3Ds API to the 3D markets. X3D remains the most robust and versatile open standard for implementation of high- integrity and capability 4D multimedia information spaces. With multiple encodings and API bindings, it is compatible with many web and industry technologies.

3D is reaching a new milestone with the convergence of various technologies, Web standards, 3D navigation devices and 3D displays. This year the conference will also focus on recent standards initiatives for 3D on the Web and address issues related to interoperability, longevity, and ownership of 3D content. Tutorials and Workshop topics include: Geo Web3D, E-Learning, Augmented Reality, and Scientific Visualization. Panel session on 3D Business value and New Dimensions of Web3D delivery will catalyze discussions on how technologies and industry leaders can work together for the future of 3D on the Web. These panel session will be open to the public.

This event will be a unique opportunity to see the “state of play” of the emerging Web3D industry. A must-attend 3D Web event of the year. For more information and to register please visit (http://conferences.web3d.org/web3d2010/registration)

Glubble (http://www.glubble.com), the leading online activity center for families with children under 12, and Highlights magazine, the best-read children’s magazine in the nation, are partnering to encourage parents to get more involved in the online lives of their children 12 and under.

Starting October 16th, Highlights and Glubble will invite parents to take a survey exploring their children’s online activities and parental involvement at http://www.highlights.com/mt/parents/. Results will be published early November. Information on safe surfing will also be shared with Highlights subscribers and Glubble users, and be made available to the public at large.

Christine French Clark, editor in chief of Highlights magazine and Highlights High Five magazine, said: “The Internet, which opens up worlds of information, fun and skill-building activities for kids, isn’t a safe place in which to simply turn young kids loose. Parental involvement is key in helping our kids grow to be wise users of technology.”

Willem-Jan Schutte, CEO of Glubble added: “Just as responsible parents select which books to read to their children and decide which TV shows their children can watch, Glubble encourages parents to extend that level of parental involvement to the Web.”

Glubble turns playing and surfing on the Internet into an experience that is fun for the entire family, and makes it easy for parents to be involved with their kids’ online learning and discovery. With Glubble, parents with children under 12 can create a personal Kids Page for each child and pre-approve the Web sites their children can access from thousands of games, kids-safe and fun Web sites, printable coloring pages, downloadable Play Art toys and educational exercises. And parents can easily add more Web sites at any time, from the Glubble content library or any site on the Internet, so Glubble grows with the interests of children.

Glubble’s new social networking features include secure chat and message posting, picture sharing, and a family events organizer. These tools teach children best practices for social networking in a safe environment and serve to enrich the most important relationship of all – family.

Highlights for Children launched their first web page for children – HighlightsKids.com – in 2003. The site, which offers interactive Hidden Pictures, games, puzzles and Highlights articles, was the first recipient of CARU’s Safe Harbor Seal.

The TV market is entering a new phase, as connected TVs hit the mainstream. According to the latest DisplaySearch Quarterly TV Design and Features Report, internet connectivity has emerged as a key feature in TVs this year.

The report, which surveyed 2010 product ranges from leading brands, notes that 55% of TV models available across Japan, North America, Europe, China and India have Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) capability. Overall, this is expected to translate to over 45 million connected TV sets, 19% of flat panel TV shipments in 2010. DisplaySearch forecasts the connected segment to reach 119 million units in 2014, accounting for 42% of all TVs shipped worldwide.

We have seen DLNA as a solution in search of a problem for a long while, but with the surge in media streaming, the technology has found its placecreating business opportunities for TV set makers, broadcasters and retailers, said Paul Gray, Director of TV Electronics Research. The internet video battleground will take place in the living room, with all facets of the TV supply chain trying to stake claims. As a result, the competition is creating attractive new viewing choices for consumers, which underpins the value of the TVs network connection.

DisplaySearch research also covers the progress made in the development of energy efficient TVs, as well as enabling technologies such as LED backlights, which are forecast to be in over 80% of LCD TVs shipped in 2014. The report also provides an analysis of the latest energy regulations. The 2013 California Energy Commission standard was seen as ambitious even last year; but some sets use only half the power necessary for compliance, a direct result of the shift in technology and increased design focus on energy, Gray noted.

The DisplaySearch Quarterly TV Design and Features Report is a quarterly update of the issues and rapid shifts in feature development in TV sets. The 200+ page report examines and forecasts video processor and signal processing IC market development including 120/100 and 200/240 Hz frame rates and market shares for major IC vendors. In addition, the report also features forecasting for MPEG-4 decoding and the digital broadcast environment around the world; TV connectivity, such as wired and wireless networked TVs; LED backlighting; 3D capability and implementation; remote controls and chassis design; and power consumption.

In Q210 the report also includes details of key featuring of new 3D models launched by leading setmakers. The Quarterly TV Design and Features Report is the only report to combine all these aspects of a fast-moving market and examine how they interact, and is complete with a database of TV set featuring for over 200 models in low, mid and high positions in major regional markets.
